Lejrbål er historien om en række personer, der alle befinder sig i lejren Marienfelde i Vestberlin. Alle er de på vej videre i livet og alle sidder de fast i en form for momentum på vej ind i fremtiden. Marienfelde er mellemstationen for de, der rejste fra øst til vest, og hvis skæbner på kryds og tværs flettes sammen, og hvor et fællesskab opstår i ventetiden på at komme videre.
Fire fortællinger – fire skæbner
Vi følger Nelly Senff, kemiker og mor til to små børn, der ønsker at rejse væk fra øst i jagten på personlig frihed. Manden til hendes børn er påstået død ved et selvmord, men hele tiden lurer tvivlen om hvorvidt, det forholder sig sådan eller om han enten er blevet myrdet eller måske er flygtet til vest tidligere.
Vi følger Nellys ankomst til lejren og følger, hvordan hun gennemgår afhøring omkring hendes motiver for at flygte. Én af mændene der afhører hende er CIA-agenten John Bird, der fatter sympati for hende. John Bird er udstationeret fra USA. Han lever i Berlin med sin kone i et kærlighedsløst ægteskab, hvor det mest af alt handler om at være væk fra hinanden.
Derudover følger vi den polske kvinde, Krystyna Jablonowska, der er ankommet til lejren med sin far og sin syge bror, der har behov for at blive behandlet i vesten, men ender med at dø på hospitalet. Penge til rejsen har hun fået ved at sælge sin elskede cello, men hendes indsats påskønnes langt fra hverken af faderen eller broderen. Efter broderens død forlader hun faderen i lejren og rejser videre med håbet om et liv for sig selv. Håb er der til gengæld ikke meget af hos Hans Pischke, der har siddet i lejren længe og ikke magter at komme videre. Han er uddannet skuespiller og var politisk aktiv i DDR, hvor han gjorde oprør imod styret.
Dette er dog nu en fjern fortid og han kan ikke længere finde sin identitet, og ender med at forsøge selvmord. Det lykkedes dog ikke. I stedet tager han i lejren imod den datter han angiveligt skulle have fået med kvinden han elskede, men som svigtede ham.
Os og dem
Et af temaerne i romanen omhandler dualiteten omkring ”os og dem” der herskede i datidens Tyskland og imellem øst og vest. Der hersker en anspændt atmosfære og tolerancen er ikke høj.
Krystyna Jablonowska bliver på sit arbejde i en grillbar beskyldt for at tage af kassen idet hun er det åbenlyse offer på grund af hendes polske nationalitet, og Nellys børn er udsat for grove mobberier i skolen. Hendes søn, Aleksej, ender på hospitalet efter at være blevet gennembanket af de andre børn i skolen. Her må Nelly desuden lægge øre til beskyldninger fra lægen, der har behandlet hendes søn om, at det er hende, der har misbrugt og svigtet hendes barn.
Efterfølgende bliver den lille familie opsøgt af den dreng der har overfaldet Aleksej. Han er blevet slæbt med af sin mor, der ønsker han skal undskylde. En sådan er det dog ikke muligt at få fra drengen, og hyklerisk som kvinden er, bortforklarer hun sin søns opførsel med en sådan-er-børn-undskyldning.
Det nærmere motiv for at opsøge viser sig imod slutningen af romanen, da det er juleaften i lejren. Her dukker kvinden atter op med sin mand, Dr. Rothe, og de hylder sig selv som velgørere og uddeler julegaver til børnene i lejren.
Hans Pischke mærker også til fordommene, han har svært ved at få job grundet to fængselsstraffe fra Østtyskland og hjælp får han ikke meget fra af – hans arbejdsformidlingsrådgiver har ellers mange kreative jobforslag. Pischke bliver desuden ramt af fordommene internt idet, der i lejren hersker uro – der går rygter om en forræder iblandt dem, og Hans Pischke bliver brutalt overfaldet, da de andre i lejren har mistanke om, at han er stikker fra Stasi. Det viser sig dog, at det i stedet er en kvinde, angiveligt ved navn Grit Mehring, der har spredt rygterne og hun er i stedet selv blevet anholdt.
At vælge sine kampe
Kampen er det centrale tema i bogen og det synliggøres for personerne i denne periode, hvor de er sat i stå imellem fortiden og nutiden. Alle personerne i bogen kæmper hver især deres små og store kampe imod dels styret, men også imod deres familie og deres baggrund, og måske mest af alt samvittigheden over at have ladt andre i stikken østpå, for når alt kommer til alt, så har mødet med vesten haft store omkostninger for dem, hver især. Spørgsmålet der ligger ubesvaret hen er, om det var kampen værd?
Om forfatteren
Julia Franck (f. 1970) er født i det tidligere DDR og har selv været igennem Marienfelde med sin familie, da de tog fra øst til vest i 1978. Hun debuterede i 1997 med romanen Der neue Koch. Lejrbål er hendes første bog udgivet på dansk. I 2008 udkom også romanen Middagsfruen på dansk. Middagsfruen er en bevægende familieroman om livet i Tyskland i tiden mellem første og anden verdenskrig, og de valg som personerne er tvunget ti l at træffe for at kunne eksistere.
